On April 7 and 8, Union Home Minister Amit Shah is scheduled to visit J&K to evaluate security and assess counter-insurgency operations of security forces. Sources close to the development say the visit was part of ongoing government efforts to achieve zero infiltration across the border.

Shah wields many cards on his visit to the region, during which he will preside over a high-level security review meeting with top officials of the Jammu and Kashmir administration, the Indian Army, central paramilitary forces, and the intelligence agencies. It will be a matter for the meeting to discuss the ways to strengthen counter-terrorism steps and improve surveillance along the Line of Control (LoC) as well as the International Border (IB) and its networks for terrorist activities.

The security review follows regular mine sweep exercises in Jammu-based forward areas where the home minister will also meet troops deployed along the border. His visit is principally aimed at regenerating the morale of security people who guard the region from superficial infiltration and cross-border threats.

Amit Shah has been closely observing security operations in Jammu and Kashmir and, on repeated occasions, has expressed the need for a comprehensive plan to crack down on infiltration and end support to terrorists, officials said. Another facet of his directives has been eliminating the network that, in turn, supports infiltrated militants and breaking down the cartels that finance terrorism through drugs.

On the same day (i.e., March 21), while speaking to media in New Delhi, the Rajya Sabha, answering to a debate on the functioning of the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA), Shah provided data on terror-related incidents in J&K. The government’s commitment to eliminate terrorism from the region and to establish permanent peace was abundantly underscored by his statements.

Shah’s visit will also underline the government’s determination to tighten security arrangements and improve coordination among all armed forces operating in Jammu and Kashmir.
