Amit Shah, Union Home Minister and the RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat will visit the Andaman and Nicobar Islands beginning Thursday to celebrate the legacy of the former senior official Vinayak Damodar Savarkar, a senior official said. As a part of their visit they are expected to unveil a statue of Savarkar and participate in various cultural and public activities around the islands.
There have been great reinforcements of security arrangements in favor of the high profile visits of Amit Shah, and there might be some restrictions in traffic in specific areas in order to allow business to run smoothly in the events. It is anticipated that Bhagwat will pay a short visit to local Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) workers in Sri Vijaya Puram, Dollygunj, in the first visit to the archipelago in his capacity of the Sarsanghchalak. This will be his second visit to the Andamans, but he had also visited the islands almost twenty years back during the same time he was a Sarkaryavah, whereas it will be the second visit by Amit Shah to the Andamans since he had earlier visited the islands in January 2023 on the occasion of the 126th birth anniversary of Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose.
Both leaders will also reveal the statue of Savarkar at Beodnabad in the South Andaman at around 9:30 am on December 12. They are to unleash a song in the honor of Savarkar in the evening at an occasion initiated by the Dr. B. R. Ambedkar Institute of Technology. Departure of the Union Home Minister is probable either on the night of December 12, or the next morning. Bhagwat, however, can deliver a speech at a general meeting in the ITF Ground, Sri Vijaya Puram on December 13 and then proceed to leave the islands on December 14.
This is a Maharashtra-based business group orchestrating the event as a way of commemorating the 116 th anniversary of the poem, savarkar pran talamala, which was written in 1909. In 1911, the British sent Savarkar to the Cellular Jail in Port Blair because of his revolutionary efforts.
