On Saturday, the first phase of the revamped Lachit Barphukan Police Academy at Dergaon in Golaghat district of Assam was inaugurated by Union Home Minister Amit Shah. He also laid stone for the second phase of the development of the academy.
Among other things, DGP Harmeet Singh briefed Shah on the new facilities of the academy during the visit. Shah toured the state-of-the-art building accompanied by Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma and Union Minister Sarbananda Sonowal, who were taking photographs together with senior officials.
On Friday evening, Amit Shah came to Dergaon as part of his three-day tour of Assam and Mizoram. The academy spread across 340 acres is undergoing a major transformation under two phases at a total cost of ₹1,024 crore being undertaken by the officials. The first phase to the tune of ₹167.4 crore involves a five-story building with smart classrooms, a weapon training stimulator, research labs, an admin block, a library, computer labs, seminar rooms, a modern parade ground and a police museum.
One of the academy’s high profile areas is the weapon training stimulator. The advanced technology lets trainees practice firing skills and combat techniques in a controlled, low-risk environment to experience hazards and costs of real life training. It is usable with several firearms and thereby allows for the evaluation and improvement of trainees’ skill levels.
Interactive digital boards and personal computers come with the smart classrooms to give a modern and technology-driven learning experience. The officials said that the integrated infrastructure will theoretically and practically facilitate training of trainees.
The second phase of the project will strengthen the academy’s structure further and make the academy a premier police training institute in the region. The initiative is aimed at raising the standard of law enforcement training in Assam as well as in India.
