New Delhi: Social Media platform, Twitter on Tuesday moved to the Karnataka High court saying that the compliance with Centre’s decision to remove certain content from the twitter handles of some political parties violates the basic idea of freedom of speech.
Twitter, which has over 24 million users in India, confronted the Government’s decision by going to the court and asking it to intervene.
In June this year IT Ministry wrote to twitter about non- compliance of its block orders, warning that it can invoke legal action. Twitter has now challenged the same in High Court stating provisions of the IT Law. The Government wants to block the tweets related to farmers’ protest and the handling of COVID-19 along with some posts supporting independent Sikh state. The Government alleged that the posts were spreading misinformation.
Meanwhile, many Indian users including Ministers and Bureaucrats have shifted to another platform named, Koo, accusing Twitter of non- compliance of Indian Laws.
Union Minister Rajeev Chandrasekhar on Tuesday took to his twitter handle and stated that all internet platforms have the right for judicial review in the country. Also, there lies an obligation for them to comply with the rules of India.
