The Allahabad High Court Bar Association has gone on indefinite strike against the proposed transfer of Justice Yashwant Varma from the Delhi High Court to the Allahabad High Court. The lawyers began a strike on Tuesday and turned up at gate number 3 of the high court complex holding a sit-in protest.
Addressing the media, Bar Association President Anil Tiwari said, “What we are protesting against is not any particular court or judge, but those people who, according to him, have betrayed the judicial system. Our fight is against corruption, lack of transparency in their system”, he added. “Now we ask the immediate withdrawal of the transfer order of Justice Varma.”
It had already expressed strong opposition to the transfer on Monday when the Bar Association decided to go on an indefinite strike starting Tuesday. According to Tiwari, the association is ready for a long and determined struggle. “There has always been an effort to conceal this matter from the very beginning. Today, lawyers across the nation fight on the same side in this fight. We are not going to return to work until we find a solution,” he added.
The row arose when large quantities of cash were found at Justice Varma’s home in Lutyens Delhi after a fire broke out there on March 14. Chief Justice of India Sanjiv Khanna of the Supreme Court collegium also confirmed the recommendation to move Justice Varma to his parent Allahabad High Court. In addition, the Delhi High Court withdrew all work assigned to him to be done after him.
The collegium has recommended the move, which was made public on Monday on the Supreme Court website, sparking outrage amongst lawyers and thus making the demand for judicial transparency and accountability stronger.
