The sharp increase in jet fuel prices due to ongoing tensions in West Asia is now affecting air travel. Air India and Air India Express have decided to impose a fuel surcharge on domestic and international flights. This follows a nationwide increase in LPG prices. Following domestic gas, air travel is also set to become more expensive.
According to a statement issued by the airline on Tuesday, a fuel surcharge of ₹399 will be levied on every domestic flight ticket from March 12. This charge will also apply to flights to SAARC countries. Surcharges have also been increased on international routes. A fuel surcharge of ₹10 will be levied on flights to West Asia. For Africa, this charge has been increased by ₹30 to ₹90. For Southeast Asia, it has been increased by ₹20 to ₹60.
The ongoing war and tensions in West Asia are now impacting everyday life in India. Several states, including Delhi, West Bengal, Karnataka, Maharashtra, and Odisha, are experiencing a severe shortage of commercial LPG cylinders. This has severely impacted the operations of hotels and restaurants. According to industry organizations, if supplies don’t return to normal soon, a significant number of hotels and restaurants in cities including Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai, Bengaluru, and Kolkata may be forced to close in the next one to two days.
In addition to Mumbai, cities in Pune, Aurangabad, Nagpur, Delhi, Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Odisha, Karnataka, Telangana, and Andhra Pradesh are also experiencing similar problems. Commercial LPG supplies have been disrupted for the past week, with supplies almost completely halted in many areas since Monday.
