New Delhi: The central government today assured the Supreme Court that the timelines for judicial appointments would be followed. Signaling a dial-down on the confrontation with the Supreme Court over judges’ appointments, the pending collegium recommendations shall be cleared soon.
Attorney General for India R Venkataramani told a bench comprising Justice Sanjay Kishan Kaul and Abhay S Oka that the government is undertaking all efforts made to conform to the times laid by the Supreme Court.
The process of appointing judges in India has been the subject of multiple judicial decisions and several petitions have raised important constitutional questions about the appointment and transfer of judges. A seven-judge bench of the Supreme Court ruled that the views of CJI did not bind government.
In lieu of this AF R Venkataramani told the court today that out of 104 recommendations made by the collegium of high courts, 44 are likely to be processed and sent to the hon. Court by this weekend.
