Lucknow: In a landmark event for India’s defence manufacturing sector, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh and Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath flagged off the first batch of BrahMos supersonic cruise missiles produced at the BrahMos Aerospace unit in Sarojini Nagar, Lucknow.
The ceremonial dispatch marks a significant milestone for the Uttar Pradesh Defence Industrial Corridor (UPDIC) and a major stride towards achieving ‘Aatmanirbhar Bharat’ (self-reliant India) in critical defence technologies.
The state-of-the-art facility, which became fully operational after its inauguration on May 11, 2025, is the first unit within the UPDIC to manage the entire process of the missile system—from assembly and integration to final testing—indigenously. This capability reinforces India’s strategic autonomy in producing one of the world’s most advanced precision-strike weapon systems.
During the event, the dignitaries also inaugurated the Booster Building and witnessed demonstrations of the booster docking process. The production of the BrahMos missiles in Lucknow is expected to generate sustained GST revenue for the state and create substantial employment opportunities for highly skilled youth.
Officials stated that the successful rollout of the first batch of missiles, which will now be prepared for deployment by the Indian Armed Forces, positions Uttar Pradesh as a key partner in the national “Make in India, Make for the World” campaign. The facility’s initial target is to produce 80-100 missiles annually, with plans to scale up to around 150 per year.
