NEW DELHI: AAPs Shelly Oberoi retained the mayoral post for the second term after BJP’s mayoral candidate Shikha Rai withdrew her nomination as soon as the House met for the mayoral polls today.
BJPs deputy mayor candidate, Soni Pandey too withdrew her nomination paving way for AAP’s Aale Mohammad Iqbal to take over the position for the second term.
In the previos election held on February 22, AAP’s Shelly Oberoi won by 34 votes and became the first Mayor of the reunified MCD. She pitted against BJP leader Shikha Rai, the councillor from the Greater Kailash-1 ward.
Oberoi is a former visiting assistant professor at Delhi University and a first-time councillor. She contested the elections from former Delhi BJP chief Adesh Gupta’s home turf of East Patel Nagar and defeated candidate Deepali Kumar by 269 votes.
Mayor polls for MCD have been stalled thrice earlier amidst ruckus in the house and opposition members misbehaved. The final polls were conducted after the Supreme Court clarified that nominated members, called aldermen, cannot be given the right to vote.
