Guwahati: The flood situation in Assam deteriorated on Wednesday with the death the toll rising to nine in the current pre-monsoon floods and landslides. As per the Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA), the number of affected increased to 6.62 lakh in 27 districts. The local administrations have set up 248 relief camps and distribution centres in flood-affected people.
According to the latest bulletin of ASDMA, 46160.43 hectares of crop area have been inundated and massive erosion has been reported from Chirang, Darrang, Dhubri, Barpeta, Bongaigaon, Charaideo, Dibrugarh, Kamrup Metropolitan, Nalbari, Tinsukia, Udalguri, Sivasagar, Sonitpur, Tamulpur and districts.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) predicted widespread rainfall with isolated heavy falls over Arunachal Pradesh on May 19th. Heavy to very heavy rainfall likely to occur at isolated places over Meghalaya, while Assam may experience heavy to very heavy rainfall at isolated places.
The weather office predicted fairly widespread rainfall with isolated heavy downpour over Assam-Meghalaya and Sub-Himalayan West Bengal and Sikkim during the next five days.
