In the latest in the ongoing investigation into a gold smuggling case involving Karnataka actor Ranya Rao, it was reported that the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) and the Gujarat Anti Terrorism Squad (ATS) had carried out a massive search operation in Ahmedabad on March 17. This consisted of 88 kilograms of gold bars recovered along with diamond studded jewellery, luxury watches, and money from a search conducted at a residential flat in the Paldi area of the city.
The operation led to the seizure of 87.92 kilograms of gold bars of an estimated value of ₹80 crore, the Ministry of Finance stated. Most of the gold bars reportedly carry foreign markings, which confirms that the gold bars had been smuggled to India. Authorities also found 19.66 kilograms of studded jewellery blessed with diamonds and other precious or semi-precious stones.
The search operation did not end at precious metals and jewellery. Additionally, the DRI team unearthed a collection of high-end luxury watches. Among these were the Patek Phillipe watch with diamonds encrusted, which is a line of watches with solid gold cases and diamonds encrusted on the face while the time and date being separately highlighted that cost a premium amount, and the Jacob & Co. timepiece and Frank Muller watch which are known to be very premium in craftsmanship and sky-high prices. These luxury items are currently being valued, and as we have seen in the past, they will continue to bring to the staggering haul even further.
It has led to the recovery of jewellery, gold, and luxury watches apart from ₹1.37 crore in cash from the same flat, along with the accused. Authorities are investigating whether these assets also somehow relate to the gold smuggling network. This case continues, and the DRI and ATS have become more and more fierce in their probe of it.
