New Delhi: India recorded 8,309 fresh infections in the past 24 hours. The recovery rate at 98.34 per cent accounted for 9,905 recuperations in the last 24 hours taking the total recoveries to 3,40,08,183. The daily positivity rate stood at 1.09 per cent, less than 2 per cent for 56 consecutive days. The number of active cases stood at 1,03,859; lowest in 544 days accounting for 0.30 per cent of the total number of cases.

The active cases reported a decline by 1832 in the last 24 hours. However, the mortality rate recorded at 1.36 per cent reported a spike in deaths recording 236 fatalities, taking the cumulative death toll to 4,68,790.

Second worst hit state Tamil Nadu, recorded 736 new COVID-19 cases and nine deaths in the past 24 hours. Nearly 772 patients recovered from the virus on Sunday while 8,337 active infections pertained. The total number of deaths stands at 36,463. North-eastern state Mizoram observed 282 recoveries and 1 death. 3834 active cases were reported.

Meanwhile, Prez Cyril Ramaphosa announced on Sunday that South Africa will remain on the lowest ”Level One” of its five-level lockdown strategy to fight the Covid-19 pandemic despite the global panic around the detection of the Omicron variant in the country.

As per the statistics reported to Ministry of Family Health and Welfare, so far 122.41 crore COVID-19 vaccine doses have been administered in the country , including 42.04 lakh doses given in the last 24 hours. As he centre ordered strict screening on arrivals amidst the Omicron scare, 7,62,268 infected samples were tested on Sunday taking the cumulative tests to 64.02 crores.
