Bhubaneshwar: Odisha Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises Department informed on its X handle on Wednesday that eight products of the state and Lanjia painting have received the Geographical Indication (GI) tag. This recognition, akin to a royal stamp of authenticity, marks a pivotal moment for these treasures of Odisha’s cultural and culinary heritage.

Products that have received the GI tag include Odisha Khajuri Jaggery (Date Jaggery), Dhenkanal Magaji, Mayurbhanj Kai Chutney, Nayagarh Kantimundi Brinjal and Dongria Kondh embroidered shawls. Apart from this, paintings of Kendrapara Rasabali, Koraput Kalajira rice, and Lanjia Saura have got the GI tag.

Among the eight products granted the GI tag are Odisha Khajuri Guda, a melt-in-your-mouth jaggery made from the sap of the date palm in Gajapati district. Dhenkanal Magji, a sweet and savory flatbread, and Mayurbhanj Kai Chutney, a delightful concoction of mangoes, add new dimensions to the state’s gastronomic tapestry. Nayagarh Kanteimundi Brinjal, with its unique shape and taste, joins the ranks of celebrated Odia vegetables.

Dungaria Kondh Embroidered Shawl, intricately woven with vibrant threads and motifs, stands as a testament to the vibrant textile traditions of the state. Kendrapara Rasabali, a sweet delicacy made from milk and date palm jaggery, promises to tantalize taste buds. Finally, Koraput Kalajeera Rice, known for its distinct aroma and flavor, completes this octet of Odia pride.

Neelmadhab Agricultural Organization had applied for GI registration for Kantimundi brinjal on February 8, 2021. Krishi Vigyan Kendra at OUAT, Bhubaneswar and Nayagarh facilitated GI tag certificate for Kantimundi Brinjal.
