An earthquake of 5.8 on the Richter scale jolted the northern Indian state of Jammu and Kashmir Thursday afternoon. The earthquake, which occurred at 6.0, was recorded on the Richter scale at 4:19 pm. However, since the information was collected from local officials, there have been no reports of losses of lives or property. Still, after a massive quake, it seems that the area has been left rather unscathed.
The earthquake originated from Afghanistan at the geographic coordinates of 36.49N and 71.27E. The earthquake was also felt deeply at a depth of 165 kilometres below the Seabed. This depth probably explains why the shocks (the latest of which occurred in different areas in the Jammu and Kashmir region) have not been particularly destructive.
Kashmir Valley authorities have assured that there have not been reported cases of people being injured or property being destroyed amidst the calamity. However, when the earthquake hit the region, people felt panic moment, but fast response groups were on standby to check on any effects on the region. It should be noted that rescuers continued to stay on alert in case of any unexpected occurrences, but up to this moment, everything has been okay.
Earthquakes are quite frequent in this part of the country due to its location on several major tectonic plate boundaries. Moderate to small-scale earthquakes have occurred in Jammu Kashmir and other states in the past. But the activity of local authorities and other organizations, as well as the region’s readiness for such natural events, has prevented the negative consequences of this last earthquake. They keep vigil and fix every other eventuality as a result of the earthquake to avoid compensation for any other effects in future.
