Ahmedabad: On Monday, the Gujarat Anti-Terrorist Squad (ATS) claimed that it had arrested four Sri Lankans in Ahmedabad on suspicion of belonging to the ISIS terrorist group. This major arrest is at hand two days before the Indian Premier League (IPL) graces Ahmedabad with important matches at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Motera. Security concerns are even higher as the qualifier and eliminator matches have been fixed for Tuesday and Wednesday in the region.
Inside sources close to ATS opined that the four were picked up as soon as they landed at Adam Airport on Monday morning. The authorities are still investigating and understanding their operation and links. The police have not released the names of the people rounded up. But initial reports also suggest that the ATS have reportedly found items of evidentiary value in their possession, which points to suspected terrorist activities.
The arrests have had the effect of cracking down on safety and security around the Narendra Modi Stadium, where huge crowds will be for the IPL matches. The ATS and other security companies are diligently working to protect the participants and attendees of the event from potentially harmful people.
Guantanamo’s regained captives expose the remaining threat of ISIS and other terror groups that still look for followers worldwide. The Gujarat ATS has been proactive in aiming to prevent such threats as well as neutralize them in time, thus proving its commitment to security, especially in the region.
This also summarizes the continued relationship between Indian security agencies and the ones in other countries in the fight against terrorism. The way in which the ATS responded to the reports of the incident suggests that they are ready and that information and surveillance are considered a priority.
More information will continue to come out regarding what exactly the suspects were up to and what they were planning.
