Nainital: Four people died and 21 were injured after a roadways bus fell into a 100-metre-deep ditch in Bhimtal area of Uttarakhand’s Nainital district on Wednesday.

The accident occurred on the Bhimtal-Ranibagh road, following which the police immediately reached the spot and initiated rescue operations, as per reports. The injured passengers were aided with ropes by the police and locals.

“A roadways bus was heading from Pithoragarh to Haldwani. The driver lost control of the bus and it fell into a deep gorge…The injured have been rescued with the help of locals. 21 people have been injured and 4 people have died,” Dr Jagdish Chandra, superintendent of police, Nainital.

Uttarakhand CM said he was saddened by the accident and ordered immediate relief and rescue operations. He further ordered relief amount to be provided to the families of the deceased ₹ 10lakhs, to the seriously injured persons ₹ 3 lakhs and to the normally injured persons between ₹ 15- ₹ 25 thousand.

“The news of the bus accident near Bhimtal is very sad. The local administration has been directed to carry out immediate relief and rescue operations. I pray to Baba Kedar for the safety of all the travellers,” he added.

“Today, on 25 December 2024, information was received from the District Control Room, Nainital that a roadways bus has crashed near Bhimtal, on which the rescue teams of SDRF have left for the spot from Post Nainital and Khairna,” SSP Nainital Prahlad Meena said.
