The Andaman Sea was hit by an earthquake with a magnitude of 4.5 on the Richter scale early in the morning on Sunday, the National Centre of Seismology (NCS) confirmed. Data that was provided by the NCS further indicates that the tremor occurred at a depth of 10 kilometres beneath the surface of the Earth.

On the 6th of July at 07.03 am, IST, the seismic event was recorded. The NCS wrote on an official post on X (formerly Twitter): Earthquake of M: 4.5, On: 06/07/2025 07:03:34 IST, Lat: 6.60 N, Long: 95.05 E, Depth: 10 Km, Location: Andaman Sea.

The epicentre is located in the Andaman Sea area, known as a highly seismically active region in the proximity of the Sunda Trench and Andaman-Nicobar subduction zone. Since this region is still constantly moving along the tectonic lines between the Indian and Burmese plates, there are often minor to medium earthquakes.

Initial reports did not have immediate reports of infrastructure damage or loss of human life. The situation is under the watch of the authorities. No tsunami warning at all regarding this earthquake was issued by the Indian National Centre for Ocean Information Services (INCOIS).

Andaman and Nicobar Islands and other parts of the sea are not entirely safe when it comes to seismic activities, and the people living there are asked to remain vigilant without panicking. Indeterminate new releases on aftershocks or disaster image behavior should emanate after thorough examinations have been done by the seismological and disaster management units.

Still, more details are expected as the authorities are still studying the effect of this seafloor earthquake.
