Kheda: In Gujarat’s Kheda district, a case has been filed against five individuals following the deaths of five people who consumed an Ayurvedic syrup containing methyl alcohol (methanol) last month, as reported by the police. Among the accused, three are currently in police custody.
Police inspector DN Chudasama, in-charge of Nadiad Rural Police Station, revealed that a complaint of homicide has been filed against Yogeshbhai Parumal Sindhi of Nadiad, Narayan alias Kishorebhai Sakalbhai Sodha of Bilodara, Ishwarbhai Sakalbhai Sodha, Nitin Kotwani, and Bhavesh Sewakani of Vadodara. The victims, from Bilodara and Bagdu villages, complained of chest pain, leading to hospitalization. Tragically, they passed away on November 28 and 29, while two others fell ill.
According to Chudasama, the Ayurvedic syrup bottles were labeled as ‘Kalmeghasav-Asava Arishta’ and were being ordered and sold. However, the syrup within these bottles contained methyl alcohol, a poisonous substance with harmful effects on health.
The accused face charges under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code and Section 65 (A) of the Gujarat Prohibition Act. Preliminary investigations indicate a direct link between all five deaths and the consumption of the contaminated syrup. The fatal product was purchased from a grocery shop in Bilodara village near Nadiad.
This incident highlights the need for stringent monitoring of Ayurvedic products to prevent the distribution of harmful substances. Authorities are intensifying efforts to identify the sources of these adulterated products and ensure the safety of consumers. The tragic consequences of this incident underscore the importance of enforcing regulations in the production and sale of medicinal substances to protect public health.
