Top government sources quoted in a recent report say they expect to see Tahawwur Hussain Rana extradited to India ‘shortly’ because he was one of the masterminds behind the 2008 Mumbai terror attacks. An Indian multi-agency team is engaged in completing legal and documentation formalities through working in close coordination with the US authorities for the extradition, for which a team is in the US.
While earlier there were speculations that Tahawwur Rana would arrive in India this week, sources clarify that it doesn’t look like he will step onto Indian soil on Wednesday as the extradition process is still going on in the final stages. But officials have now confirmed there is a ‘very high chance’ Rana may be brought to India in the coming days, which would represent a major step forward in the murky case.
Ahead of his arrival, authorities in Delhi and Mumbai have been told to quietly arrange accommodation in high-security jails. All of these arrangements are in strict line with instructions from the U.S. judiciary for the appearance of extradited persons.
On his arrival in India, his custody will be taken care of by the National Investigation Agency (NIA) for interrogation and subsequent legal procedures. Major ones, including National Security Adviser Ajit Doval and top ministries of Home Affairs, are keeping a close watch on how the proceedings are being conducted.
A day after the U.S. Supreme Court rejected Rana’s last appeal to keep him from being extradited, this development cleared the way for his extradition. But it would not be until Rana is extradited that he will face trial on his alleged role in the coordinated terror attacks in Mumbai, eclipsing one of India’s darkest days in modern history.
