One of the accused in the 26/11 Mumbai attacks, Tahawwur Hussain Rana, was on Monday granted an additional 12-day custody of the National Investigation Agency (NIA), which is handling the case. She had been in the NIA custody for 18 days before this extension, Rana, produced before Special NIA Judge Chander Jit Singh. Rana appeared before the judge wearing a black cap on his face, and the court proceedings took place under tight security.

Senior advocate Dayan Krishnan and the special public prosecutor Narender Mann made the arguments for the NIA that Rana’s custody had to continue to unravel the full dimensions of the conspiracy behind the 26/11 attack. The NIA said Rana’s involvement in the planning and execution of the attacks ran into several locations, and it needed Rana’s further custodial interrogation to retrace some pivotal events from 17 years ago.

Advocate Piyush Sachdeva appeared for Rana’s defense as he was represented during the proceedings. The NIA’s request for the custody of Sanna was based on the grounds that there is a need to gather more evidence pertaining to the case, specifically the details of the conspiracy.

But last month, the court had directed that the NIA, in the previous order, conduct a medical examination of Rana every 24 hours and also permit him to meet his lawyer every alternate day. The court also directed that Tahawwur Rana would be allowed to use only a soft-tip pen for communicating, and the meetings with his lawyer would be held in the presence of NIA officials so that the discussions remain confidential, but supervised. The court also ensured that the NIA officials remain at a distance to prevent any mediation in their legal consultations.
