In a tragic late Friday evening accident, a passenger train going from Mysore to Darbhanga collided with a stationary goods train. The collision occurred at around 8:30 PM at Kavaraippettai railway station in Tiruvallur district, near Chennai. The parcel van of the express train caught fire and 19 passengers are reportedly injured. At least 12 coaches of the passenger train have also derailed.
“The Following Trains are diverted and rescheduled due to the accident of Train No.12578 #Mysuru – Darbhanga #BagmatiExpress at Kavaraipettai in #Chennai Division Passengers are requested to take note on this and plan your”, wrote Southern Railway on X.
The 12578 Mysuru – Darbhanga Bagmati Express train was reportedly traveling at a speed of 75 km/h when it mistakenly entered a loop line instead of the main line designated for its route. Railway officials stated that a parcel van subsequently caught fire in the incident.
Past midnight, stranded passengers were transported through MTC buses to Dr MGR Chennai Central railway station. Early in the morning, at 4:45 am, a special train departed from Dr MGR Chennai Central, taking the stranded passengers to their destination. Passengers were provided with food and water.
According to Tiruvallur District Collector Dr. T Prabhushankar, there were approximately 1,360 passengers on board, with 19 reported injuries, including four individuals who sustained severe injuries. Emergency services quickly responded, transporting the injured to a nearby hospital. Fortunately, no fatalities have been reported thus far.
