Karnataka: Two local men have been arrested in connection with the July 26 murder of BJP youth wing leader Praveen Nettaru at Bellare in Karnataka’s Dakshin Kannada district police said.

The accused have been identified as Shafiq Ballere and Zaqir Savanuru. Alok Kumar, ADGP, law and order in a media interaction said that- both had been taken into custody for questioning yesterday, and were arrested today “on the basis of evidence”.

Earlier in the day, the police had detained all the 21 suspects in the case and said that all of them are members of PFI and SDPI.

Chief Minister Basavaraj S Bommai promised a speedy investigation, and six teams were thus formed. Fifteen people were taken into custody for questioning, police said yesterday. Three of the teams were sent to regions within Karnataka and to neighbouring Kerala, as the bike had a Kerala registration number.

Praveen Nettaru, 32, district secretary of the Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha, was attacked by bike assailants while on his home from work on Monday night. Protests sparked as the news spread.
