14 Fresh Cases of the Highly Contagious COVID-19 Mutant Strain; Total Cases Surge to 20

New Delhi: Approximately 33,000 passengers arriving in India are UK-returnees since British PM Boris Johnson’s announcement on the trace of the new and more contagious mutant of the COVID-19 virus.

On the other hand, a total of 20 fresh cases of the newly found mutant have been detected in India, all of which have traveled to the country from the UK. “The situation is under careful watch”, as per the union health ministry.

All those 33,000 passengers who arrived from the UK are being tracked to find out how many of them are affected by the new variant.

On Tuesday, 6 UK-returnees were detected with the 70% more contagious mutant of COVID-19, while on Wednesday, 14 new passengers arriving from the UK have been diagnosed with the newly traced virus.

7 of the 14 new cases of the mutant virus have been reported by a Bengaluru Lab, while some have been reported by a lab in the national capital.

The numbers of the new variant have high chances for a further surge. But the doctors assert that there is nothing to worry about the virus, as it can be controlled by the same vaccination process. “There is no reason yet to believe that it is more lethal or will not be controlled by a vaccine”, said the doctors.
