NEW DELHI: India sees a single-day rise of 131 new coronavirus infections while active cases declined to 1,940. The cumulative infection tally stood at 4.46 crore (4,46,81,781), the health ministry data mentioned.
The death toll stands at 5,30,730 with one death reconciled by Kerala and one reported by Uttar Pradesh in the last 24 hours. The case fatality rate stood at 1.91 per cent.
The number of people who have recuperated from the disease surged to 4,41,49,111 as the recovery rate was recorded at 98.81 per cent.
According to the ministry website, 220.24 crore doses of Covid vaccine have been administered under the nationwide COVID-19 vaccination drive so far.
As per the data from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention released on Friday, The fast-spreading Omicron subvariant XBB.1.5 accounted for nearly half of the COVID-19 cases in the United States. It is estimated to have accounted for 49.1% of Covid cases in the country in the week ended Jan. 21, compared with 37.2% estimated last week. XBB.1.5 is currently the most transmissible variant. It is an offshoot of XBB, a combination of two other Omicron sub-variants, which was first detected in October.
