Union government told Lok Sabha that although nearly half (49.5%) of the country’s 10.17 lakh government schools have no computer facility, only 12 states have got no money for setting up computer rooms in schools under Samagra Shiksha Abhiyan (SSA). It was shared citing the latest Unified District Information System for Education Plus (UDISE+) report.

Tyagi also mentioned that 18 states and Union Territories (UTs) were not provided funds for the installation of ramps and handrails in schools under the SSA scheme. This is worrying because 14.9 percent of government schools do not have such facilities, as per the UDISE+ report that comes out in January.

According to their queries raised during the discussion in Rajya Sabha by Congress MP Balya Mama Suresh Gopinath Mhatre and Janata Dal (United) MP Lovely Anand, Minister of State for Education Jayant Choudhary detailed the amount received for basic infrastructure in government schools of the year 2024-25.

SSA is a centrally sponsored scheme where funds are provided for supporting schools in a 60:40 ratio by the states and the Centre, respectively. Funds are allocated by the Centre to improve infrastructure such as computer rooms, ramps, and handrails in the course of bringing inclusive and quality education to the country. After states and UTs submit proposals based on the Annual Work Plan and Budget (AWP&B) tool, the fund is disbursed.

Assam, Bihar, Gujarat, Jharkhand, Karnataka, Kerala, Mizoram, Odisha, Punjab, Sikkim, Tamil Nadu and West Bengal are the states which did not get computer rooms in the Line of Credit Programme. For the year 2024-25, ₹15,888.13 lakh were allocated to other states for this purpose.

Likewise, the 18 states and UTs in which the ramps and handrails were not funded in Thiru include Andhra Pradesh, Bihar, Gujarat, Haryana, Jharkhand, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Rajasthan, Tamil Nadu, and other states.
