New Delhi: The Centre on Friday raised concerns after the Omicron variant tally of the country rose to 101 with cases being reported from 11 states. With the threat of Omicron sprawling, the health ministry underlined the need for COVID-19 norms to be tightened. The ministry further urged the citizens to avoid non-essential activities and stay away from gatherings.
Renewed warnings of the dangers posed by the South African variant came as the national capital reported 10 new cases early today, taking the state’s tally to 22. Maharashtra stands ahead amongst other states with a total of 32 cases so far. The centre expressed tension as two young kids from Maharashtra aged 18 months and 3 years were infected with the new variant.
Since the detection of Omicron in South Africa, 77 countries including the US, Israel, Hongkong and Japan have reported to WHO. Govt across the globe have beefed up screening and contact tracing on arrivals from nations at risk. Meanwhile, India reported its first Omicron infection in Karnataka on December 2. A significant rise in the tally has been noticed in two weeks.
