Patna: Bihar witnessed the collapse of 10 bridges in the past fortnight. The latest statement issued by the State’s Water Resource Department announced the suspension of 16 engineers. Bihar Development Secretary Chaitanya Prasad addressed the media regarding this wherein he confirmed that the contractors responsible for building these bridges will be traced and held to account.
The move comes a day after the 10th bridge collapsed on Thursday in Saran district. This was the district’s third bridge to fall. Besides, bridges also collapsed in Kishanganj, Siwan, Araria, Madhubani and East Champaran.
Meanwhile, this collapse has caused political turmoil with Nitish Kumar ruling government trading charges with the Opposition. The building construction minister, Ashok Kumar Choudhary blamed then deputy CM Tejashwi Prasad Yadav for not implementing a good bridge maintenance policy.
Union Minister and former state Chief Minister Jitan Ram Manjhi blamed the monsoon for these back-to-back incidents. He defended Nitish Kumar and said that CM has instructed the officials incharged to take action against those being negligent of their maintenance.
