World Population Day: Undoubtedly, the population has seen a massive increase worldwide in recent centuries. This is evident in the population growth. While it took over hundreds of thousands of years to reach 1 billion population mark, it expanded to seven times the number within just 200 years. With this growth, the world’s population crossed 7 billion in 2011.
Recent projections by the United Nation expects the global population to reach 10.9 billion by 2100. However, in this notable demographic shift, data from UNFPA states that India overtook China as the world’s most populous nation in 2023.

India’s population was estimated at 142.86 crores or 1.42 billion marginally ahead of China. India tops the chart and right next on the list is China with a shift attributed to 11.1 million deaths and 9 million births.

This is a matter of concern as it means increasing pressure on the already insufficient health and education resources. This year the World Population Day theme focused on investing in data collection. Quoting Jonathan Sacks, close to a billion i.e one-eighth of the global population still lives in hunger. Even UN’s recent tweet claimed that there are people who still remain uncounted for. In order to deliver health and educational needs for all it is crucial that they are being counted.
