The world comes together yet another time to celebrate World Environment Day on Jun 5th. This annual celebration is significant global event dedicated to raising awareness and promoting action for environmental protection.
Saudi Arabia is set to host this year’s celebration based on the theme “Our Land. Our future”, a call to action for global efforts to heal our planet’s ecosystems. The theme emphasises on the critical role of land restoration in combating climate change, protecting biodiversity, and ensuring a sustainable future.
The UN Decade on Ecosystem Restoration (021-2030) serves as the backdrop for World Environment Day 2024. This initiative highlights the urgency of reviving the damaged ecosystems like wetlands, grasslands, deserts, and more.
According to the UN Convention to Combat Desertification, up to 40 per cent of the planet’s land is degraded, directly affecting half of the world’s population. The number and duration of droughts has increased by 29 per cent since 2000 – without urgent action, droughts may affect over three-quarters of the world’s population by 2050.
Land restoration is a key pillar of the UN Decade on Ecosystem Restoration (2021-2030), a rallying call for the protection and revival of ecosystems all around the world, which is critical to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals.
Over the years, the World Environment Day has grown into a global platform for public outreach, with participation from 150 countries worldwide. Annually, the day marks a specific environmental issue, with host countries leading the celebration and organising activities that engage the global community.
