Emojis are nowadays a part of the world for every human; we cannot imagine our life without them. Virtual and digital social fonts are known on Instagram, WhatsApp, Facebook, or X (previously Twitter), these little digital characters have become the universal means of depicting feelings, reactions, and even deep thoughts. Emojis supersede the language barriers, so people who belong to different cultures and are located in various regions of the world can feel closer and learn more about each other. Being able to demonstrate happiness, love, and even excitement, as well as express sadness or sarcasm, emojis have made the communication process in the modern age tentatively different.

A special day is dedicated to them every year on July 17 and is named World Emoji Day to recognise their increased importance in digital communication. It was on this day that Jeremy Burge, the founder of Emojipedia, created the site, which is referred to as Emojipedia and is quite popular. Interestingly, the date that was picked, which is July 17, occurs on the calendar emoji on most platforms.

Emoji can find its origins in the 1980s when a computer scientist, Scott Fahlman, proposed to use emoticons such as (:-) and (:-) to denote an emotion in digital text. But the real origin of emojis came in 1999 when a Japanese designer, Shigetaka Kurita, invented the initial emoji set to be utilised by a mobile phone company. Their fame in Asia soon became viral and later spread across the globe.

Internationally, Google requested the Unicode Consortium, a nonprofit organisation that standardises digital text, to officially approve emojis in the year 2007, along with the help of its internationalisation team. Later in 2011, Apple released the emoji keyboard on iOS, helping to expose emojis to the world.

Emojis have since changed a lot, and they currently represent a high degree of human diversity, including skin tones, gender, culture, and family set-up. In the present day, emojis are no longer mere light-hearted images: they are our cultural symbols, which influence digital narratives and enable individuals to show their emotions in situations where mere words are insufficient.
