World Bicycle Day was first marked on June 3, 2018, following a resolution adopted by the United Nations General Assembly on April 12, 2018, during its 72nd Regular Session. The resolution was supported by all 193 member states, encouraging the inclusion of bicycles in regional, subnational and international development programs and policies.
Bicycles are one of the oldest and most essential means of transportation. Cycling is not only enjoyable but also a healthy and environmentally friendly mode of transport. Beyond its nostalgic charm, biking offers numerous practical benefits and contributes to environmental sustainability. To emphasise these advantages and encourage bicycle use, June 3 is celebrated as World Bicycle Day. This day aims to promote physical activity through cycling.
The World Health Organization (WHO) underscores that cycling is an effective way to achieve recommended activity levels, making it an important practice for maintaining health and well-being.
With growing concerns about the lack of physical activity, pollution, and its associated health hazards, bicycles have become a clean, affordable and environmentally friendly mode of transportation. World Bicycle Day promotes the use of bicycles to help achieve cleaner air and the conservation of nature, addressing both health and environmental issues effectively.
