Birsa Munda (15 November 1875 – 9 June 1900) was an Indian tribal freedom fighter and folk hero of the Munda tribe. He led a tribal religious millennium movement in the Bengal Presidency (now Jharkhand) in the late 19th century during the British Raj, making him an important figure in the history of the Indian independence movement. He united the tribal community against the British rule and fought to protect their rights and was martyred at the age of just 25. Since then, the tribals of India started considering him as God. He is also known as ‘Dhartiba’. Therefore, his birth anniversary is celebrated as Tribal Day across the country.
