Stag beetles represent a significant saproxylic assemblage in forest ecosystems. As per the London-based Natural History Museum, these insects have a lifespan of 3-7 years and weigh between 2-6 grams. The females are 30-50 mm in length while the male insect is 35-70 mm long. They are also used for medicinal purposes.
Looking at the price of a whooping Rs. 75 lakhs equivalent to owning a luxury car, these Stag beetles are found in warm tropical environments. However, they are sensitive to cold temperatures and naturally inhabit woodlands. Most of the time of Stag Beetle is spent underground as larvae. Interestingly, the larvae aides in decomposition and in this way it contributes to health of the forest. They use their strong jaws to break down tough fibers and so these subterranean chefs munch on decaying wood. Once they emerge as adults, the male specie’s primary focus shifts to attracting mates.
