India celebrates the Savitribai Phule birthday, a name that shines bright in the history of India’s social reforms, on January 3. Known as the country’s first female teacher, Savitribai broke societal barriers at a time when educating women was considered unthinkable. The day is recognized as Women’s Education Day in honour of her pioneering work to promote education for women, particularly at a time when such ideas were revolutionary.

“On the occasion of the birth anniversary of Savitribai Phule, the social revolutionary who introduced the alphabet to girl children, I proudly declare January 3rd every year as Women Teachers’ Day on behalf of the public government. I pay my tribute to that great woman”, reads Telangana’s CM Revanth Reddy Savitribai Phule speech on X.

History; Why Women’s Education Day Is Celebrated

In Telangana, Women’s Teachers Day is celebrated to recognize the invaluable contributions of female educators and highlight their role in shaping society through education. This day also serves as a tribute to the legacy of Savitribai Phule, a pioneering figure in women’s education in India, whose work continues to inspire educators today.

Savitribai was the eldest daughter of Lakshmi and Khandoji Nevase Patil. At the age of 9, she married Jyotirao Phule, a fellow social reformer who played an instrumental role in supporting her education and social initiatives. Together, they pioneered efforts to transform the educational landscape of the nation.

In 1848, the couple established India’s first school for girls, Bhide Wada, in Pune. This groundbreaking step marked the beginning of a movement that would change the lives of countless women.

Despite facing intense opposition from society, Savitribai Phule Jayanti pursued her teaching training at Ahmednagar’s American Missionaries Institute and Pune’s Normal School.

By 1851, Savitribai and Jyotirao had set up three schools with over 150 students. Their work soon expanded, leading to the creation of 17 schools, including institutions for Dalits and women, across India.
