Ramachandra Rao, the DGP step-father of actor Ranya Rao, who was recently arrested in connection with a gold smuggling case, has been sent on “compulsory leave” with immediate effect, the Karnataka government announced in a circular.
KV Sharath Chandra, the Additional Director General of Police (Recruitment), has been appointed to concurrently serve as the Chairman & Managing Director of the Karnataka State Police Housing & Infrastructure Development Corporation Ltd Bengaluru, a position held by Rao’s stepfather.
Meanwhile, Kannada actress Ranya Rao, arrested in the gold smuggling case, has made serious allegations against DRI officials. Ranya has made many sensational allegations against the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence officers, including slapping her in custody, physically torturing her and keeping her hungry.
In a letter to the Additional Director General of DRI, Ranya claimed innocence and said that she has been implicated in a false case. “From the time I was taken into custody till the time I was produced in court, I was physically tortured by officials whom I can identify,” claimed Ranya in her letter sent through the Chief Superintendent of Parappana Agrahara Jail. Ranya alleged that she was slapped several times during interrogation, was not given food and was forced to sign blank documents by DRI officials.
For the unversed, Ranya Rao, daughter of a senior police officer, was arrested by the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) from Kempegowda International Airport in Bengaluru on March 4, 2025. She was trying to smuggle 14.8 kg of gold from Dubai. The value of this gold is around Rs 12 crore.
