Patna: Rain, lightning, and thundershowers across north India killed nearly 50 people across several states and caused massive damage to infrastructure. At least 25 people died across several districts in Bihar, with a maximum of 18 deaths from Nalanda district. Two people died in Siwan, one each in Katihar, Darbhanga, Begusarai, Bhagalpur, and Jehanabad, officials said. RJD leader Tejashwi Yadav claimed in a post on X that over 50 people died on Thursday.

“I am deeply saddened by the tragic deaths of over 50 people in Bihar due to various incidents of storm, rain, lightning, tree, and wall collapse. I express my deepest condolences to all the deceased. May God give strength to the families affected by the disaster in this hour of grief. I demand from the Bihar government that it should provide proper compensation to all the affected families. The sudden heavy rain also destroyed the ready wheat crop kept in the barns of the farmers. The Bihar government should compensate for the loss of all such farmers and give them proper compensation, wrote Tejashwi Yadav.

According to a statement issued by the Bihar chief minister’s office (CMO), 18 deaths were reported in Nalanda, followed by two in Siwan, one each in Katihar, Darbhanga, Begusarai, Bhagalpur and Jehanabad.

On Wednesday, 13 people died in lightning strikes in four districts of Bihar. Bihar chief minister Nitish Kumar condoled the deaths and announced an ex-gratia of ₹4 lakh each for the next of kin of the deceased.
