National Herald Case: Congress leader Sonia Gandhi and Lok Sabha Leader of the Opposition Rahul Gandhi have suffered a major setback in the National Herald money laundering case. The Delhi High Court has issued notices to Congress leaders Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi, along with other accused, in the National Herald money laundering case. The case will be heard next year.

It should be noted that earlier, Delhi’s Rouse Avenue Court had refused to take cognizance of the charge sheet, dealing a blow to the Enforcement Directorate (ED). The Enforcement Directorate (ED) subsequently challenged the lower court’s decision in the Delhi High Court. The High Court accepted the petition and issued notices to Rahul and Sonia Gandhi.

The Delhi High Court granted the ED’s petition and set the next hearing for March 12, 2026. Solicitor General Tushar Mehta, representing the ED, argued in the Delhi High Court that the final conclusion is that the accused have acquired assets worth ₹2,000 crore in exchange for a sum of ₹50 lakh. Mehta stated that a private complaint was filed by an individual in June 2014, which was taken cognizance of by a lower court and later stayed by the Delhi High Court.

The chargesheet includes the names of several prominent figures.

In its charge sheet, the ED named Sonia Gandhi, Rahul Gandhi, Sam Pitroda, Suman Dubey, Sunil Bhandari, Young Indian, and Dotex Merchandise Private Ltd. The Congress party argued that the ED investigation was a political vendetta, while the ED claimed it was a serious economic crime in which evidence of fraud and money laundering was found.

What about the National Herald case?

Apart from Rahul and Sonia, Suman Dubey, Sam Pitroda, Young Indian, Dotex Merchandise and Sunil Bhandari are accused in the National Herald case. They are accused of usurping assets worth more than ₹2,000 crore of Associated Journals Limited (AJL), the publisher of the National Herald newspaper. BJP leader Subramanian Swamy had filed a petition in Delhi’s Patiala House Court in 2012, accusing Sonia, Rahul and Congress leaders Motilal Vora, Oscar Fernandez, Sam Pitroda and Suman Dubey of usurping the loss-making National Herald newspaper through fraud and financial misappropriation.
