National Cancer Awareness Day is celebrated on 7th November to make people aware of cancer prevention and early diagnosis.

As the global second leading cause of death, cancer is considered a global health problem, which makes awareness matters important. The day is significant because people should take a united stand and fight this life-threatening disease.

In India, National Cancer Awareness Day focuses on the need for lifestyle alterations that decrease the incidence of cancer and to engage the public in early detection and prevention. Cancer care has been managed through the National Cancer Control Programme, which began in 1975 to prevent cancer within the entire nation. The strength of this program is that it addresses not only the question of educating the population about protection from cancer but also popularises available options for cancer treatment centres.

One of the major aspects of this awareness day is fundraising for cancer treatment and research in order to fight this illness. Considering the fact that cancer affects a vast number of individuals in our country, the support that is derived on National Cancer Awareness Day is most helpful to the patients, as well as the development of better means of treatment.

The WHO has estimated that India recorded more than 1.41 million new cancer incidences in 2022, along with 910,120 cancer deaths. These features indicate why cancer continues to exert a heavy burden and why sustained education, study, and support remain important.

According to the IARC, lip, oral cavity, and lung cancers are among the most common types of cancer in men globally; they have greatly contributed to the new cases.

In women, breast and cervical cancers form the largest part, with an incidence of about 27% and 18%, respectively, of the new cases. The latter statistics underscore the need to tailor the awareness and early detection drives.
