New Delhi: Marking a significant milestone, India successfully carried out the maiden flight tests of the Integrated Air Defence Weapon System (IADWS) off the coast of Odisha. On Sunday, Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) informed that the flight trials have been successfully conducted on Saturday, August 23, 2025 at 12:30 PM.

The IADWS as designed, is a multi-tiered air defence solution capable of countering aerial threats ranging from fighter aircrafts and unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs). Defence Minister, Rajnath Singh informed on X about this multi-layered defence weapon system and wrote, “IADWS is a multi-layered air defence system comprising of all indigenous Quick Reaction Surface to Air Missile (QRSAM), Advanced Very Short Range Air Defence System (VSHORADS) missiles and a high power laser based Directed Energy Weapon(DEW).”

“I congratulate the DRDO, Indian armed forces and the industry for successful development of IADWS,” Singh said on social media. “This unique flight test has established the multi-layered air-defence capability of our country and is going to strengthen area defence for important facilities against enemy aerial threats,” he further added.

This defence weapon system combines three cutting-edge indigenous technologies; the Quick Reaction Surface-to-Air Missile (QRSAM), the Advanced Very Short Range Air Defence System (VSHORADS) missiles, and high-power laser-based Directed Energy Weapon (DEW). Officials have recognised it as a successful trial in India’s efforts towards self-reliance in defence technology as these systems are capable of neutralising a wide spectrum of aerial threats.

Earlier on August 20, the Ministry of Defence announced that India successfully test-fired the Intermediate Range Ballistic Missile Agni-5 from ITR Chandipur, Odisha. All operational and  technical parameters validated. Launch conducted under the aegis of Strategic Forces Command.
