Sriharikota: World Space Week is an annual celebration of science and technology, and their contribution to the betterment of the human condition. It is held from October 4 to 10 each year, and commemorates two important dates in space history.
October 4, 1957 marks the launch of the first human-made Earth satellite, Sputnik 1. October 10, 1967, marks the signing of the Outer Space Treaty.
The week is crucial for India as Chandrayaan-3 spacecraft has completed all its mission objectives on the Moon, the Vikram lander surprised the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) with its successful hop experiment. This means that Chandrayaan-3 spacecraft again landed on the Moon on command, a move that indicates new possible opportunities for future moon missions.
World Space Week is organized by the World Space Week Association (WSWA), a non-profit organization that promotes space awareness and education around the world. The WSWA works with space agencies, aerospace companies, schools, planetaria, museums, and astronomy clubs to organize a variety of events and activities during World Space Week.
The theme for World Space Week 2023 is “Space and Entrepreneurship.” This theme recognizes the growing significance of the commercial space industry in space, and the increasing opportunities for space entrepreneurship and new benefits of space developed by space entrepreneurs.
World Space Week is a great opportunity for people of all ages to learn more about space and its importance to our lives. It is also a chance to celebrate the achievements of space exploration and to look to the future of space exploration.
