Human Rights Day is a global day commemorating the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, which was adopted in 1948. Human Rights Day was established in 1950 after the United Nations General Assembly passed Resolution 423 (V), in which states and organizations were invited to adopt December 10, which is why December is observed each year as Human Rights Day.
The Declaration, which is not a binding document, nevertheless inspired more than 60 human rights instruments and became an international standard of human rights. Today the consensus of all UN member states on the basic human rights set out in the same declaration strengthens its relevance in daily life.
