Teachers’ Day is a special day of celebration of Teachers in India, which is observed on the fifth of September. This day is to honour the birthday of Dr. Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan, who was born on this day. Dr Radhakrishnan has honoured Indian education and philosophy greatly through his scholarship, philosophy, and presidency, which has made him a well-respected figure in India.

Significance

Dr Radhakrishnan was born on September 5, 1888, in a middle-class Telugu Brahmin family. He faced a lot of difficulties and challenges in his academic career. He continued his studies with a scholarship and got his Master’s Degree in Philosophy. Later, in 1917, he came up with “The Philosophy of Rabindranath Tagore, where indeed he demonstrated his academic prowess. His stint as the Vice Chancellor of Andhra University between 1931 and 1936 and as Vice Chancellor of Banaras Hindu University from 1939 showed his commitment towards academics and administration.

In 1962, when he was holding the office of the President of India, his students planned to observe his birthday in a special manner. Instead, he proposed September 5 to be celebrated as Teachers’ Day so that everyone can celebrate all the educators of society. This move stressed to him how important the teaching profession was to him and how important it is to honour dedicated teachers.

How Teachers Day is Celebrated?

Teachers’ Day is a day when all the schools and other institutions of education, from the kindergarten level to the university level, come alive. Several events are held to celebrate teachers or to show society’s acknowledgement of their efforts in teaching. Thankfulness is demonstrated by the students by writing and composing loving letters and cards and even organizing events.
