On the occasion of Guru Gobind Singh Jayanti, the Sikhs celebrate the birthday of their tenth and final Guru, Guru Gobind Singh Ji. This year, the festival is being celebrated on Monday, 6 January 2025 and represents the 358th birth anniversary of the revered Guru.
Also known as Gobind Singh Ji, Guru Gobind Singh was born in Patna Sahib in the ”Paush Shukla Saptami”, which is much revered and celebrated across the world. According to Drik Panchang, the Saptami Tithi begins at 8:15 PM on January 5 and ends at 6:23 PM on January 6, with most of the celebrations carried out after sunrise on January 6.
Guru Gobind Singh was another saint, philosopher and the tenth and the last Guru in the Sikh tradition when only nine years old, following the execution of his father, Guru Tegh Bahadur. It has it that his father’s life was cut short by Mughal Emperor Aurangzeb on the grounds of not converting to Islam. After this, he devoted his energies to the protection of the Sikh faith, the annihilation of caste, and Social Justice for the downtrodden.
However, as a spiritual guide, thinker and rhymer Guru Gobind Singh was one of the key icon makers for the emergence of Sikhism. He started the Khalsa in the late 1600s, a warrior nation meant to fight oppression and injustice. He also put forward the Five Articles of Faith, and these are the items that Khalsa Sikhs must carry always on them as requirements of their faith.
There are contributions passed on from Guru Gobind Singh Ji that are not just limited to the leadership. He safeguarded and strengthened Sikhism by creating hymns and prayers incorporated into the Guru Granth Sahib, the Sikhism holy book. On this auspicious occasion, millions of Sikhs across the world come together to pay our respect to his ideas and ideals of justice and equality and serve the society.
