New Delhi: The COVID-19 worry has spread once again as cases rise in the country, with the total Coronavirus cases in India reaching 1010 on May 27. However, with mild and subtle symptoms, experts have advised people not to panic, but remain cautious. The new variants NB.1.8.1 and LF.7 are under observation by the World Health Organisation (WHO), and no reason for concern has been flagged yet. As cases rise in Kerala and cross the 400 mark, residents are concerned. Spikes were also observed in Delhi, Maharashtra, and Gujarat.

Is COVID-19 again rising in India?

According to the latest data from the Ministry of Health and Welfare, Kerala has reported the highest spike among all states, with a rise of 335 cases. Maharashtra follows with 153 new cases, while Delhi has recorded 99 additional infections. As Delhi-NCR’s total crosses 100, Gujarat has seen an increase of 76 cases, bringing its overall tally to 83. Delhi CM Rekha Gupta asserted that the hospitals were fully prepared to tackle if the number rises. Chhattisgarh has witnessed two cases of coronavirus; one in Durg and one in Raipur.

A man undergoing tuberculosis treatment in Rajasthan also passed away after testing COVID-19 positive over the weekend. Health officials however, insist that there is no cause for panic at this time as the circulating variants have mild symptoms with no severity.

According to data released by the Health Ministry on Monday morning, the active case tally in India has now crossed the 1000 mark. Kerala leads the list with more than 430 patients while another 105 have been discharged since May 19. Other states with notable case counts include Maharashtra (209), Delhi (104), Gujarat (83), and Karnataka (47). What strain of COVID is going around now?

The current strain of the COVID-19 virus as reported by INSACOG data, are protein mutations of the JN.1 virus. Initial research indicates that the NB.1.8.1 variant could be more transmissible than previous strains, likely due to its stronger binding ability to human cells. To date, 58 genome sequences of NB.1.8.1 have been submitted to the global COVID-19 database, originating from 22 different countries. The NF.7 variant was observed largely in southern parts of India and both NB.1.8.1 and NF.7 have been reported largely from urban metro cities. However, international cases from the US have also reported high communicability.

What are current COVID symptoms in 2025?

The current symptoms of COVID-19 in India in 2025 are observed to be mild and subtle. As per the recent reports published by WHO, the NB.1.8.1 poses a low global health risk. However, some common symptoms have been identified as sore throat, fatigue, mild cough, fever, muscle aches, nasal congestion, low-grade hyperthermia, headaches, nausea and gastrointestinal issues.
