50 years of Emergency 1975: Exactly 50 years ago, in the year 1975, from the intervening night of 25 and 26 June to 21 March 1977 (21 months), the then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi declared emergency in the country. Today this emergency has completed 50 years. The then President, Fakhruddin Ali Ahmed, declared an emergency in the country under Article 352 of the Indian Constitution on the recommendation of the government led by the then Prime Minister, Indira Gandhi. Later, the Union Cabinet approved this proclamation. With this, the country saw such a situation for the next 19 months, which is considered the darkest chapter in the history of India.

Calling it one of the darkest chapters in India’s democratic history, Prime Minister Narendra Modi today (June 25), marking the 50th anniversary of the Emergency, said that no Indian will ever forget how the spirit of the Constitution was violated and the voice of Parliament muzzled.

In a series of posts on X, PM Modi noted that on this day in 1975, the values enshrined in the Constitution were set aside, fundamental rights were suspended, press freedom was extinguished, and a large number of political leaders, social workers, students, and ordinary citizens were jailed.

At that time, Indira Gandhi had taken many dictatorial decisions. One of these decisions was the sterilization program. At that time, people were forcibly captured and sterilized. This story of sterilization is closer to Turkman Gate in Delhi. : The wounds of the Emergency are still fresh in Turkman Gate in Delhi. The stories of atrocities like bulldozers, firing and forced sterilization are still alive in the eyes of the elderly. The pain of the forced sterilization campaign, sudden demolition of houses and separation of families is still clearly visible in the eyes of the elderly.

Marking 50 Years of Emergency

Saluting every person who stood firm in the fight against the Emergency, the Prime Minister said these were the people from all over India, from all walks of life, from diverse ideologies who worked closely with each other with one aim: to protect India’s democratic fabric and to preserve the ideals for which freedom fighters devoted their lives. “It was their collective struggle that ensured that the then Congress Government had to restore democracy and call for fresh elections, which they badly lost,” he said.

“We also reiterate our commitment to strengthening the principles in our Constitution and working together to realise our vision of a Viksit Bharat. May we scale new heights of progress and fulfil the dreams of the poor and downtrodden,” Modi said.
