After 11 years as Prime Minister, Narendra Modi has led a government that changed and shaped modern Indian politics. He has overseen the BJP since becoming India’s prime minister in May 2014, leading them to two successful general election campaigns that have changed how India is run.
Since Modi became the leader, India has experienced firm leadership centred on changes to the economy, defence, infrastructure and social security. Beneficial programs such as “Make in India,” “Digital India,” “Swachh Bharat Abhiyan,” and “Ayushman Bharat” have greatly affected how things are run in India. People widely discussed and were affected by the government decisions to end Article 370 in Jammu & Kashmir, apply the Goods and Services Tax and pass the Citizenship Amendment Act.
The whole world watched, rightly or wrongly, as Prime Minister Modi launched extensive vaccination efforts to fight COVID-19. India’s national image is now stronger due to its leadership, as India has joined more global discussions and cooperated more with the United States, Japan and Australia in the Quad group.
But experts argue that Modi’s leadership has led to greater centralisation of governmental power, problems with democratic principles and a rise in concerns about social and religious tensions. Still, his support has not weakened, helped by nationalism, support for welfare and powerful media.
The Indian government under Modi, now in its twelfth year, should support economic growth, look after those without jobs and handle the country’s multiple cultures while preparing for the general elections in 2029. In the following step, experts will seek to see if this political strength can guide lasting and equal development for all parts of society.
