“Leo,” starring Vijay, is making strides toward the Rs 500 crore global box office mark, despite a recent downturn in collections. On Friday, the action-thriller earned approximately Rs 7 crore, marking a substantial drop from the impressive earnings of Rs 39 crore and Rs 34 crore on Monday and Tuesday. Wednesday saw a nearly 56 percent decrease in collections, bringing in Rs 13 crore, followed by Rs 9 crore on Thursday. The film’s total box office collection in India now stands at Rs 271.25 crore, with a 29.27% Tamil occupancy on Friday.
Part of Lokesh Kanagaraj’s cinematic universe, “Leo” is set after the events of “Karthi’s Kaithi” and “Kamal Haasan’s Vikram.” While it’s the third highest-grossing Tamil film of all time, trailing “Jailer” and “2.0,” both featuring Rajinikanth, “Leo” has amassed Rs 476 crore worldwide, according to Sacnilk.
Competing with Rajinikanth’s “Jailer,” which has a worldwide gross of Rs 604 crore, “Leo” earned Rs 271 crore in the first nine days. “Jailer” eventually reached a total of Rs 344 crore in India. Whether “Leo” can surpass this figure remains to be seen. The film also features Sanjay Dutt, Trisha, Arjun Sarja, Mysskin, and Gautham Menon in pivotal roles, with Mathew Thomas, Mansoor Ali Khan, and Priya Anand also part of the cast. “Leo” marks the second collaboration between Vijay and Lokesh after “Master.”
Director Lokesh Kanagaraj discussed the “LCU” (Lokesh Cinematic Universe) concept before the film’s release, stating, “I see the LCU as an action-packed universe, whose heroes are loud about their message towards a drug-free society.” This approach is a departure from the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) and focuses exclusively on action-entertainers within a shared universe.
In the competitive world of Tamil cinema, “Leo” is making a strong showing, with the potential to continue its successful run at the box office.
