Mumbai: The Kerala Story 2: Goes Beyond has faced a challenging start in theaters. Directed by Kamakhya Narayan Singh and produced by Vipul Amrutlal Shah, the film arrived amidst significant legal hurdles and polarized public opinion. Despite the buzz, its financial performance has been described as “lukewarm” compared to the runaway success of its 2023 predecessor.

Box Office Performance

In its first four days, the film has managed to earn approximately ₹13 crore (with domestic net collections around ₹12.8 crore). While this might seem steady for a mid-budget film, it represents a significant drop in momentum compared to the first installment.

  • Opening Weekend: The film crossed the ₹10 crore mark over its first three days, aided by a massive 500% jump on Saturday after a very slow Friday (which was impacted by a delayed release due to a court stay).
  • The Monday Test: Monday collections dipped to roughly ₹2.65 crore. In the film industry, the “first Monday” is a crucial indicator of a movie’s longevity; a sharp drop often suggests that word-of-mouth is not strong enough to sustain a long theatrical run.

There is no official announcement, however, based on past trends, ZEE5 is the most likely platform as it holds the global streaming rights to the first film released in 2023. There was also a legal issue before the film’s release. The Kerala High Court asked the makers to pause selling digital rights until certain petitions were cleared. Although the film was later released in theatres, this may have delayed the OTT release deal.

Even if it fails at the box office, The Kerala Story 2 is unlikely to stream online anytime soon because of the 8-week theatre rule.
