The horror-comedy Thamma by Ayushmann Khurrana and Rashmika Mandanna has struck the box office significantly, as it exploited the Diwali holiday on Tuesday to its utmost. A horror comedy film is the first movie in the horror comedy universe created by Maddock Films, and on the first day of its release, it earned ₹25.11 crore net ( ₹30 crore gross ) in India. Box office trackers indicated that morning shows had a small attendance of 15-16, but the figures increased to above 40 percent in the evening with people rushing to the cinemas with positive word of mouth.

The film made a little under 250K overseas, which was not much to expect, since overseas audiences do not celebrate Diwali in such a manner and the release was a mid-week event. The global total of domestic and international earnings would be 32 crore on opening day by Thamma, and this would be one of the best openings of a Hindi film in this year. The film was the top-grossing opening day film in other popular films including Saiyaara (₹30 crore) and even beat previous Maddock Horror Comedy Universe (MHCU) movies, such as Stree (₹10 crore), Bhediya (₹12 crore), and Munjya (₹5 crore). It is however still below the all time openings of Chhaava (₹47 crore) and Stree 2 (₹80 crore), the latter continuing to record the highest opening of any Indian horror film.

Under the guidance of Aditya Sarpotdar, Thamma features Ayushmann and Rashmika as lovers, who are vampires, and have to battle against Nawazuddin Siddiqui, the world-dominating vampire. Special cameos were also made with Varun Dhawan and Abhishek Banerjee, which adds to the hype as well. Critics and audiences have been celebrating the movie due to its humour, visual effects, plot, and the strange combination of horror and comedy that has become the hallmark of the Maddock Horror Comedy Universe. Thamma has a great beginning and will run a successful box office run.
