Stranger Things season 5 has finally arrived, and rather unexpectedly, it has started with the worst critical Rotten Tomatoes rating in the history of the show. The expectations of the last season were extremely high, in particular, because the viewers had to wait over three years after the dramatic ending of the fourth season in 2022. Nevertheless, so far the first four episodes of the final chapter have already gotten an 85 percent critics rating on Rotten Tomatoes, which is still a good rating, but significantly lower than past seasons.
Comparatively, the season 1 was rated at 97, season 2 at 94 and seasons three and four were rated at 89 at the time of their debut. Though it is not a big difference, the 85% rating is the lowest point in the history of the franchise. The score is pegged on 47 reviews and it is likely to fluctuate again once critics have a say following the premier of episodes 5-7 on December 25 and the release of the final episode on December 31.
Conversely, the reaction of the audience has been received by a resounding success. Season 5 has a 90 percent audience rating (the same as season 2), and is better than season 3 (86) and season 4 (89). The audience rating can change with the new episodes being streamed by more Netflix members, although initial feedback suggests it was widely approved and had huge hype.
Although critical reception has slightly decreased, members of the industry feel that this should not affect the cultural impact and popularity of the show. Stranger Things season 5 is likely to set viewership records when the entire season is released, which is anticipated to take place after many years.
Furthermore, it is mentioned by critics that it is too early to judge the season having considered half of its episodes. It will be the real strength of season 5, how the remaining episodes can bring the story to a close, whether the characters get closure or a clash of conclusions to the great mysteries of the show, and whether the overall weaving of the great finale can bring a satisfactory emotional resolution to the show.
